The film follows the beats of the original Ultraman series, where a body of government-appointed science-people look to fight wave after wave of monsters, even as one member of their gang is secretly Ultraman, a giant alien superhero who tackles both them and extraterrestrial threats to protect humanity.
Ultimately, Shin Ultraman is something that is missing a spark. Be it the callbacks or the nostalgia factor, both of them bog the film down just as much as they prop it up. There was one emotion I felt more strongly than any other while watching Shin Ultraman in theatres: "I've missed this." It may be because the film deliberately calls back to a number of past entries in the Ultra series by legendary special effects master Eiji Tsuburaya or perhaps because it's permeated with an ever-present sense of nostalgia - regardless, it is a very inviting entry into a storied franchise.Īnd yet, it feels like those aspects are its weakest links. It’s this callback element, and ability to use some of the trademark abilities of the previous Ultra, that makes Ginga quite the appealing show.Cast: Takumi Saitoh, Masami Nagasawa, Koji Yamamoto Along the way, Hikaru would discover the legacy of the other Ultras that existed on Earth and even use their powers to augment his abilities as Ultraman Ginga. Unfortunately for Hikaru, his discovery of the Ginga Spark will thrust him into a race against time to ensure other evildoers don’t get their hands on various Spark Dolls. Protagonist Hikaru Raido would come to possess the Ginga Spark, allowing him to become Ultraman Ginga. Existing as some sort of a love letter to its predecessor series, Ultraman Ginga begins at the climax of the so-called Dark Spark Wars that transformed all aliens, monsters, and even Ultras, into miniature Spark Dolls that its possessors could use as a power source. New fans of the franchise looking for a quick introduction to some of the most popular Ultras in the franchise might want to add Ultraman Ginga to their watchlist.
